The Onunu Festival Story
The Onunu Festival was created from a deep desire to showcase the culture, traditions, and, most importantly, the cuisine of the Rivers people, with the aim of giving it greater global recognition.
What is Onunu?
Onunu (also known as Tembùrú) is a distinctive dish from the Niger Delta region. It is made by pounding yam and plantain together, with palm oil giving it its unique yellowish hue and salt for flavor.
Cultural Significance
Onunu is a special dish often served at significant events such as the coronation of kings, weddings, chieftaincy installations, and even when a woman gives birth. It has been recognized as a highly nutritious and healthy food, with no known side effects.
Our Mission
The purpose of the Onunu Festival is to promote this beloved dish, increase its global recognition, and use the event as a platform to celebrate and preserve our cultural values and traditions. Onunu has been a part of our heritage for centuries and is known for its numerous health benefits. Through this festival, we aim to expand the reach and appreciation of our culinary culture worldwide.
